Saint Joseph - Jessamine Treated More than 25,000 Emergency Patients During First Year of Operation

January 2, 2010 marked the one-year anniversary of Saint Joseph - Jessamine RJ Corman Ambulatory Care Center (SJJ). When it opened its doors last year, it ended Jessamine county’s long wait for a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week emergency care facility. Prior to SJJ, residents of Jessamine County had to battle the 26 stoplights that exist between SJJ in Nicholasville and the closest Lexington hospital to receive immediate medical care. Now, they have high-quality care close to home, from emergency care to diagnostic imaging and laboratory services.

Since opening a year ago, the facility has seen a steady increase in volumes demonstrating the need the facility is fulfilling in the community. In its first year of operation (calendar year 09), Saint Joseph - Jessamine has treated 25,274 patients in its Emergency Department.

Beginning on January 22, 2010, 2009 W-2s will be available from the My Pay tab of HR/Payroll Connection for those employees providing consent by January 18, 2010.

Providing Consent
If you have not already done so, please log into HR/Payroll Connection, and select the “W-2 Tax Statement” link, which is available from the My Pay tab of HR/Payroll Connection. From the sidebar titled “W-2 Tax Statements,” on the right side of the My Pay screen, click on the link “view or request electronic delivery of your W-2” and you will be taken to a screen that provides information on how to provide consent to receive your W-2s online.

Click the link and provide consent as soon as possible to ensure easy access to your 2009 W-2 form. Some of the added benefits of “going paperless” are:

• Helping to save our environment and conserve our natural resources
• The monies saved on postage expense allows Saint Joseph Health System
to further support our ministry
• Ensuring timely retrieval of your 2009 W-2
• Filing taxes earlier
(some of you may receive refunds sooner!)

NOTE: In order to retrieve your W-2 online, you must first electronically consent by January 18, 2010!

Once you provide consent, your W-2s will only be available online for viewing and printing; W-2s will not be mailed to your home. It is only necessary to provide consent once, so if you provided consent last year, you do not need to do so again this year.

Your W-2 form will also be made available online beginning February 17, 2010 to provide you access to reprint a form in case of loss, etc.

For Questions: If you have any questions in the interim, contact the HR/Payroll Connection Support Center at 888.450.9450.

World Class Service at Saint Joseph - Berea

The following excerpt is from a letter written by an out-of-town patient who recently received medical care at Saint Joseph - Berea, and happened to be an executive for a health care company that provides customer service for some of the largest insurance providers in the country. He was very complimentary about the care he received and called Saint Joseph - Berea a "World Class" facility.

"I live in a heavily populated area with tons of access to ER facilities. I am currently [an executive] for a health care company that provides customer service for some of the largest insurance providers in the country. The reason I share that with you is that it takes a lot for me to sit down and write about exceptional service. I always impress upon my staff how much better we can be at providing what I call 'World Class' service, and often times feel that customer service is a phrase that is lightly used.

I received services at your Berea facility due to a small accident. While the experience was traumatic for me, the service I received from the moment I stepped in your facility was in fact 'World Class.' Unfortunately, I was unable to gather all of the employees' names that I dealt with as I was somewhat discombobulated. What was so exceptional about the experience is the amount of time spent in the ER. Total time was less than 60 minutes, and that includes X-rays, CT scan and evaluation by a doctor.

Not only did the staff service my needs expeditiously, they didn't miss a beat and were extremely thorough. The receptionist made me feel welcome and as if I was the only patient in the ER. The nurse who took my BP and temp was thorough and explained what I should expect during my visit. The nurse who called me back to the ER made me feel like I was visiting my mom, and the doctor (Dr. Leslie) was very thorough as well and provided personalized service which is unheard of in my area.

The X-ray technician was phenomenal and considerate, knowing I was in pain and also set the expectation for length of time the process would take. She continuously asked if I was comfortable. All in all I felt as though I had stepped into a five-star resort with a lot of white walls and floors.

I have taken the time to write such an e-mail twice in my life, and it is with pleasure that this city boy rates your facility as 'World Class' in service, people, and patient care!"

Bravo, Saint Joseph - Berea!

Comments from Kristi's & Kari's Nomination Form

Kristi McVey, RN
2 East, Saint Joseph Hospital

"Kristi is an outstanding nurse and helps to provide a stable foundation within our nursing unit. Kristi functions as both a clinical manager and focus nurse on 2 East. She has been instrumental in the development of our congestive heart failure teaching program for patients which is still evolving on a weekly basis. She also collaborates with the hospital clinical nurse specialist to expand the teaching format into other units. Her efforts have resulted in more concise and effective teaching for patients which has increased our compliance with the core measures for congestive heart failure patients.

She has been an outstanding resource and educator for staff on 2 East, many of whom have less than one year of nursing experience. Her efforts have also resulted in a dramatic increase in our unit's patient satisfaction scores and promoted a stronger unity among the work force on 2 East. Kristi exhibits a strong sense of dedication to her patients, co-workers, and the hospital and she demonstrates the core values of Saint Joseph Health System in every aspect of her work."

Kari Terando (3rd from left) and Kristi McVey (6th from left) received their Daisy Awards at a surprise ceremony attended by staff, managers, executives and co-founders of the national Daisy Foundation (co-founder Bonnie Barnes is pictured far left).

Kari Terando, RN
2 East, Saint Joseph Hospital

"Kari is kind and compassionate with a serving heart. She is dedicated to her profession and goes beyond her responsibilities to meet the needs of the patient (me) and
my family.

Kari gave me the will to fight for my life this week and I
thank her and Saint Joseph."

Comments from Carrie's Nomination Form

Carrie Clark, RN
ICU South, Saint Joseph Hospital

"My husband arrived via helicopter from [another] county. She allowed me to visit upon arrival and at once made me feel assured that he was doing fine. As his status became more critical, she explained what was being done for him. She explained the doctor’s statements in terms that were easy to understand. The doctor placed my husband on a ventilator a few hours later.

Even though it was after visiting hours, she encouraged me to visit him to see that things were going well. She was concerned for me. About 3:30 am, she assured me my husband was stable and if there were any changes, she would call. The next morning she came and sat with me after a report, telling me how the night went and that I could put his name in the book in the chapel for prayers. She had contacted the chaplains to come see me and to administer the sacraments to my husband. Carrie not only was there for my husband, but for me. She gave me hope and showed me the compassion of what a nurse is really all about."

Daisy Award-winner Carrie Clark (seated front) celebrated with fellow staff members on ICU South, executives and members of the Saint Joseph Daisy Award Committee.

A Look Back

Seton Home Health Receives Quality Recognition

Seton Home Health, a service of Saint Joseph - London, has been selected for the "2009 Best of London Award” in the Home Health Service category by the United States Commerce Association (USCA). The USCA's "Best of Local Business" Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2009 USCA Award Program "focused on quality, not quantity." Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the United States Commerce Association and data provided by third parties.
